Log 3: Re-log-ded (Big Update!)

The bad log movie-esque puns will continue.

Hello everyone!

As promised here is a major update. It's been almost a year and quite a lot has happened.

While most of what I have been working on has been the back half of the game, there are notable changes to the start, new features all together and a few extra puzzles to keep things spicy. So it's a perfect time for an updated demo!

A lot of what I will be covering will only be the broadest topics/features. I won't be getting into the nitty gritty otherwise this will be 100 pages long.

If you are updating the game please go to the bottom for *Update Info*

Onward to the good stuff, changes and features:

#1 Music ~ Oh wonderful sounds ~

Umbra has an OST! Composed by the talented and delightful Zsótér Zita A.K.A. trash-chan. This took a few months creating all the songs but I love how it turned out. In the demo you will only be able to here some of Zita's sounds (2 tracks and some stingers). I hope you look forward to more in the full version!

#2 Update Thoughts ~ I think therefore I THINK BETTER ~

Updated Thoughts

The thoughts feature has been fleshed out to provide better delivery, skippable segments and show size of the queue. Also thoughts have their own section in the settings. Want the text black and the box white? Go for it. Larger or smaller size font? Yep! Maybe you want the box to be less transparent or removed entirely? Done. Maybe you want the text a bright blue and the box magenta? Blinding and unusual colour choice but go for it.

#3 Puzzles ~ Updated and new Puzzles ~

Puzzles

For those that have played the demo before you might notice improvements here and there, most being quality of life improvements. The demo also has 2 bonus puzzles. These are very challenging though. I went way too hard on it so apologies for that.

#4 Darken ~ For all your contrasting needs ~

normal lighter scenery left, darker contrasted scenery right

There are now 2 ways to better distinguish between light and dark.

  1. When you enter a puzzle zone the lights will automatically lower.
  2. Want more contrast (such as on the right side of the image)? Then hold right mouse click and there you have it, darkness to make that light POP.

Rapid fire smaller updates and features:

  • Lighting update. To make game look goo~
  • Updated Menu. Saving settings, bug fixes, more choices oh delight
  • Tutorial option. To figure it out or not at all. You can always look at the controls in the menu regardless.
  • You start off immediately with the pickup chisel. There was no good reason to pick it up and players didn’t really find it immediately or accidentally picked it up without realising.
  • Collectable crystal. Bug fixes. Also added a pop up saying you can skip puzzles in the menu the first time you pick up a crystal (only if tutorial is on)
  • Minor holding objects improvements e.g. rotating objects faster
  • Memory FOV. When a memory is activated the field of view will decrease. When viewing memories, the majority of the time there is significant empty screen space while trying to view small models. A smaller FOV should help draw more focus and make things more understandable.
  • Skippable Intro. Press spacebar/left mouse click/escape to skip the opening camera sweep and get straight to the menu.
  • Improved loading.  *in some areas
  • Various model updates (mainly to fix lighting issues, nothing you will notice).
  • Various performance updates.
  • Various bug fixes.

and finally... drum roll please

  • The greatest concern of our generation has been solved, I finally fixed the multiple resolution displays. After literal years of plaguing me I finally sat down and forced myself to fix it. No please, hold your applause.

*Update Info*

If you have played the game before you will likely have to delete your settings save to prevent issues. Going forward this shouldn't be a problem though.

You can find your data in Users[The user you are under]/AppData/LocalLow and delete the file "Thomas Wray"

Alternatively you can just search for "Thomas Wray" and be taken right to it.

Finale~

And that's that's. I have some other things like Steam Nextfest which is in the coming weeks but aside from that, there you have it.

I can see the finishing line to completing Umbra. I'm nervous, excited... nervcited. Fingers crossed that everything runs smoothly (spoiler alert it probably won't that's the catch of making games after all)

Till next time, thanks for playing and reading.

- Thomas
